Care and Safety of Your Laptop

Charging and conserving your laptop battery

  • Find a safe place to charge your laptop where the cord will not be stepped on.
  • Leave the charger plugged into the wall at home. Plug your laptop into it every night.
  • Unplug the computer and bring it to school charged every day.
  • The orange light around the plug means that the laptop is charging. The green light means that it is charged.
  • A full change may take up to two hours.
  • To check if your laptop is fully charged, turn the computer over and push the button on the back–four lights indicate a full charge.
  • Do not step on or roll over your battery charger.
  • Do not yank the cord out of the wall or out of the computer.
  • To save battery power, close the lid when your laptop is not in use.
  • Always put the laptop to "sleep" when not using it. If it will be more than a few hours before you use the laptop again, shut it down properly.
  • Restarting the laptop uses more power than “sleeping.”
  • To save battery power, turn off the Airport when you don’t need it. Click the Airport radar sign in the upper-right corner of the screen to turn the Airport on and off.

Keeping your laptop clean

  • Wash your hands before using your computer.
  • Use a slightly damp cloth to gently wipe the outside, the keyboard, and the screen of your laptop.
  • Never use any commercial cleaning products, alcohol, or sprays on your laptop.
  • When not in use, keep your laptop in the carrying bag.

Keeping your laptop safe

  • Do not carry your laptop when it is open, even in the classroom.
  • Shut the lid, and carry it with both arms wrapped around it.
  • Never take your laptop out of the bag on the bus or at after-school activities.
  • Never let other students or friends borrow your computer, unless directed by your teacher.
  • Do not leave your laptop out of your sight (for example, at sports, music lessons, church, Kids & Co., etc.)
  • If you must leave your laptop in the car, lock it in the trunk or a compartment where it is not visible to others.
  • Keep your computer away from all liquids (water, drinks, sinks, bathtubs).
  • Do not eat while using your laptop. Crumbs and food can damage the keyboard and screen.
  • Avoid extreme temperatures. A cold computer takes a long time to warm up.
  • High heat can cause the screen to burst.
  • Use your laptop on a flat stable surface (desk or talbe) and keep it centered.
  • Avoid slamming the lid or placing heavy objects on it; the screen can crack.
  • Do not touch, scratch, hit, or push on the screen; it can be damaged.
  • Do not place anything between the keyboard and the screen with the lid down.
  • Do not pick at the laptop keys or remove a key for any reason. If something falls between the keys, tell your teacher as soon as you can.
  • Do not download software, files, or games from the Internet. This will keep your laptop safe from viruses.

Using your laptop

  • Do not shut down your laptop between classroom uses. Close the lid and it will “sleep.”
  • Do not make any additions or changes to software or hardware on your laptop.
  • It is school property that is on loan to you and your responsibility to keep it in good condition.
  • Do not write or draw on the surfaces of your laptop. Do not put stickers on the cover.
  • Mute (F3) the computer, unless told to use sound.
  • Keep your eyes on your own screen, unless you are doing group work.
  • Your hands are for your laptop only. If you are helping someone else, tell them what to do but do not do it for them.
  • Only print when given permission by your teacher.
  • Use only one hand when working the track pad. Your pointer finger acts as your mouse.
  • Your thumb acts as your mouse button.
  • Finger movement on the track pad should be soft and light. The touch pad is not pressure sensitive and requires little force.

Connecting your laptop to the Internet at home

  • If your family has a DSL or Cable connection to the Internet that uses DHCP to assign an IP address, you should be able to use your laptop at home to connect to the Internet without changing any settings.
  • Use the Ethernet port to connect to the router or modem with an Ethernet cable. If your home has a wireless network, your laptop should be able to connect to the Internet automatically.
  • If you need assistance connecting your computer to the Internet at home, please call your own Internet Service Provider help desk for assistance. The District help desk will not be able to assist you with a home connection.
